Artist statment
Walking from my house to the studio I see two Jewish - Ethiopian girls, hair flattened, sitting on a street corner along with a few boys - Eritrean refugees. The group is uniformly clad in a sloppy reggae style, reminiscent of 1970's Bronx. An orthodox contractor stops right by them in his SUV, asking if they want to come and work for the day. They ignore him, listening to sluggish Dub music coming out of a cell phone. As I pass by, I notice that their eyes are closed and that they are dwelling in a private ceremony, generating a field of pale green light surrounding them.
Of late, I have been considering the musical term "Fusion" which for me has a local cultural connotation and embodies a concept that represents my way of action. In Israel the term "Fusion" connotes a cultural melting pot.
As an artist who lives and works in south Tel-Aviv, I find that this historical concept of "Melting pot" as a metaphor for a heterogeneous society that its past and future are melting together, inspires me in it's unorthodox mix of cultural materials. For me the term "Fusion" is also relevant in the new age sense, as a kind of alchemical process, in a context which I transform the oft quoted phrase by McLuhan :”The medium is the message” to “The artist is a medium”. In whatever mediums I choose to work- from sculpture to digital works and videos it is always kind of a visual séance. I believe art have the power to unfold hidden realities and illuminate them with light.
